DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Warner University student-athletes cleaned up this week in Sun Conference Player of the Week honors as the Royals had three athletes recognized for their play last week announced Monday. Senior Derrell Henderson was selected as The Sun Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week, Becky Powell was selected as The Sun Conference softball Pitcher of the Week and senior Dan Smith was selected as The Sun Conference Player of the Week.
Henderson earned the honor after leading the Royals to a 2-1 conference record during the week ending Feb. 7. He averaged 21 points, nine rebounds and 1.7 assists and shot 52.2 percent from the field and 74.5 percent from the free throw line.
Powell, a sophomore from Spring Hill, Fla., tallied 14 strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched on the week, allowing only two hits. She picked up a career-high 10 strikeouts in the Royals’ season opener against Ave Maria and four more against the Gyrenes in relief action to earn the win in consecutive games. The Royals are now 2-0 overall.
Despite the Royals 0-3 week, Smith was a bright spot for the Royals, going 6-for-10 against NCAA II teams, including a perfect 3-for-3 with a homerun against NCAA II #2 Florida Southern. He capped off the week with a homer against Eckerd College. Smith drove in eight runs while crossing the plate five times.
