LAKE WALES, Fla. –
Bernardo Bergamin scored in the 88
th minute to lift Warner University to a 2-1 victory over Florida Memorial University in Sun Conference men's soccer action on Saturday night. The goal broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Royals their second victory of the season (2-9-1) and in conference play (2-5). The Lions drop to 8-6 with the loss and are now 3-3 in league play.
The game was scoreless for the first 40 minutes as the Lions carried a 9-1 shot advantage in the first half. Finally in the 41
st minute Florida Memorial converted a penalty kick and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Warner goalkeeper David Bartalo made four saves in the opening half.
The Royals' scoring chances increased in the second half and eventually led to the game-tying goal in the 69
th minute.
Gianluca Cuomo converted a penalty kick for the Royals and score was tied 1-1.
Neither side could score the go-ahead goal despite multiple chances. Finally, with the clock winding down in the 88
th minute,
Bernardo Bergamin took the pass from Devyn
Hencil and buried the game-winner in the back of the net. The shot was Bergamin's first and only shot of the game after coming in off the bench.
Bartalos logged all 90 minutes in goal for the Royals and added two saves in the second half giving him four in the game.
The Royals head to Lakeland, Fla. next Wednesday night, Oct. 21, for a 7:30 p.m. kick-off with Southeastern University.
