LAKE WALES, Fla. – A first half goal by
Jonathan Freiria was all Warner University men's soccer team needed to defeat cross-town rivals Webber International University on Wednesday night. The Royals defeated the Warriors 1-0 to record their first win of the 2015 season. The non-conference friendly also served as the first leg of the 2015 Crooked Lake Cup.
Freiria's goal came in the 20
th minute and was just the third shot of the game for the Royals.
Eddy De Abreu had the assist and the Royals carried the 1-0 lead into halftime. It's the second goal of the season for Freiria who netted his first last week against SCAD Savannah.
David Bartalos and the rest of the Warner backline had to fend off nine Webber shots in the first half. Bartalos was up to the task making four saves.
In the second half, the Warriors continued to pressure the Royals with a 6-1 shot advantage but could not break through on the scoreboard. Bartalos made two more saves giving him six in the game.
Freiria finished with two of Warner's three shots on goal;
Gianluca Cuomo had the other.
The Royals are back at home this Saturday night, Oct. 9, against Montreat College (N.C.) in their final non-conference match of the season. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. following the women's game also against Montreat at 5 p.m.
