Strong Second Half Propels Tigers Past Lady Royals 69-56


LAKE WALES, Fla. – For the second time in less than a week, Warner University women's basketball team lost to Edward Waters College.  The Lady Royals dropped to 2-3 on the young season following a 69-56 loss to the Tigers on Wednesday night in the Turner Athletic Center.  The Tigers sweep the season series from the Lady Royals after winning their first match-up last week 58-52 in Jacksonville, Fla.

After an even first quarter the Lady Royals edged out the Tigers in the second quarter by one point and took a 28-27 lead into halftime.  The Lady Royals shot 41.4% from the field in the first half and were led by Porsche Shakes with seven points.  Shakes hit the go ahead shot with less than 15 seconds left to put the Lady Royals ahead going into the break.

In the second half the Tigers used 5-for-8 shooting from behind the arc to retake the lead and stay ahead of the Lady Royals down the stretch.  At the end of the third quarter, Edward Waters held a 46-40 lead.  Then in the fourth quarter, the Tigers pulled away outscoring the Lady Royals 23-16.

The Lady Royals were 0-for-4 from the behind the arc in the second half and went just 10-of-16 from the free throw line as well.

Shakes finished the game with a team-high 13 points and six assists.  Mariah Williams followed with 11 points and two steals.  Baylie Bridges also reached double-digits finishing with 10 for the Lady Royals.

Corlisa Pope was the leading rebounder for the Royals racking up 10 boards and eight points in 19 minutes of action.  Isis Mance was second on the team with six rebounds. 
The Lady Royals outrebounded the Tigers as a team 38-34.

On Friday, Nov. 13, the Lady Royals head to Temple Terrace, Fla. for a rematch against Florida College.  The Lady Royals won their first meeting 67-42 back on Nov. 3 in Lake Wales, Fla.  Friday's game will tipoff at 5 p.m. as part of a men's and women's doubleheader.
