Fire Too Much for Lady Royals in 65-49 Conference Road Loss


LAKELAND, Fla. – In their first game of 2016, Warner University women's basketball team lost on the road to Southeastern University 65-49 on Wednesday night.  The loss drops the Lady Royals' record to 6-6 and also evens their Sun Conference record to 1-1.  The Fire are now 11-3 overall and 2-1 in league play following the win.

The Fire had things going early with a 9-2 lead in the first five minutes of game.  It was a 14-6 lead for Southeastern at the end of the first quarter.  The Lady Royals went scoreless over the first four minutes of the second quarter allowing the Fire to extend their lead to 17 points, 23-6.

The Lady Royals shot 21.4% from the field in the first half and trailed 33-14 at the break.

In the third quarter the Lady Royals doubled their point total scoring 16 points but the Fire added 21 points of their own and led 54-30 heading to the fourth and final quarter.

The Lady Royals rallied in the fourth quarter outscoring the Fire 19-11 but it was not enough as they fell 65-49. 

As a team the Lady Royals outrebounded the Fire 47-39 as 11 players recorded at least one rebound for Warner.  Corlisa Pope led the team with eight rebounds.

Porsche Shakes was the leading scorer for the Lady Royals with 11 points in the loss.  I'munique Green followed with eight points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Royals return to action next week with three conference games on the docket.  The Lady Royals travel to Miami, Fla. twice next week to take on Florida Memorial University (Jan. 11) and St. Thomas University (Jan. 13).  Both games will start at 6 p.m.  Then on Saturday, Jan. 16, the Lady Royals return to the Turner Athletic Center for their first home game of the New Year against Keiser University.  Tip-off for that game is set for 2 p.m.
