LAKE WALES – FLA. A date with the University of the Virgin Islands finally broke the Warner Women's Basketball 6 game losing streak.
A strong fourth quarter allowed the Royals to tie up the game and send themselves into the first overtime of the season. Coming back from a deficit of more than ten points, the Royals brought the score to within one point with a minute and a half left in the game, and then
Randi Chandler hit a three point shot which tied the game with 25 seconds left.
The five minutes of overtime went back and forth between the two teams. With less than a minute left, the game was all tied up with 68 points. Neither team was able to score, causing a double overtime. The Royals were able to scratch their way back after The Virgin Islands made their score 79 points. With back to back foul shot attempts by
Daijah Turner and
Cheyenne Daphney, The Royals pulled ahead 80-79. After another foul shot attempt and two more points scored, Warner sealed their win by a score of 82-79.
For the second game in a row, the Royals had four players who scored double digit points.
Valeria Merlos led the way as she scored 20 points, 6-9 of which were from behind the arch.
Daijah Turner was next, scoring 17 points and adding three steals.
Randi Chandler added 15 points, all of which were in three point range.
D'Asia James was the fourth Royal with not only double digit points, but double digit rebounds as well, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
This weekend is rivalry weekend as Warner will take on Webber International University in a home match on January 26
th at 2:00 PM.
