Warner University Royals' Hard-fought Double Overtime Battle Ends in Narrow Loss, 87-71 2OT

SARASOTA, FL - In an intense SUN Conference basketball showdown, the Warner University Royals faced a tough defeat against the New College of Florida Banyans with a final score of 87-81 after a gripping double overtime session on January 18, 2025, at SCF.

The game started strong for the Royals as they took an early lead with key plays including free throws and a layup by Kalyah Watson which helped the Royals secure a commanding 9-point lead in the first quarter. Julia Gilbert and Courtney Logan were pivotal throughout the game, scoring 26 and 22 points respectively. Gilbert's performance was particularly crucial in the overtime periods where her three-point shots kept the Royals in contention.

Despite leading at halftime with a score of 38-26, the Royals faced a renewed challenge from the Banyans in the second half. Sierra Moore and Camila Zbynski of New College stepped up their game, significantly cutting down Warner's lead by the end of the third period to just two points. The fourth quarter saw several ties in the score, but it was the Banyans who found their stride in the overtime periods, securing their win with critical shots late in the second overtime.

Despite the loss, the Royals showed substantial strengths including a solid start and strong defensive plays, highlighted by Kalyah Watson's 8 rebounds and the collective effort that resulted in pivotal steals by Bethany Howard and Jasmine Cheema

Looking ahead, the Royals aim to regroup and focus on their next challenge against Webber International University on January 22, 2025, in Lake Wales, FL.
