MACON, Ga. - In their final game of the season, Warner University football team lost on the road to NCAA-I FCS Mercer University (Ga.) 56-0. The Royals' sophomore season comes to an end with a 5-5 overall record and a 3-2 mark in the first year of football in The Sun Conference. The Bears improve to 6-5 in their second season of football after reviving their program for the first time since 1941 last year.
Facing a tough task on road, the Royals fell behind quickly against the Bears in the first quarter. Mercer scored touchdowns on their first three possessions and were aided by two Warner interceptions.
Offensively, the Royals managed just five first downs and 60 yards of total offense in the first half while giving up 308 yards and an additional 21 points in the second quarter.
The Royals trailed the Bears 42-0 at the break.
The Bears scored first in the second half on their first possession running the score to 49-0. On the Royals' second possession of the third quarter,
Darrin Davis, Jr. scrambled for eight yards on second down crossing midfield for the first time in the game. The drive stalled four plays later the Royals were forced to punt however.
The Bears added their final touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter capping off the night's scoring at 56-0. The touchdown drive took up 10 minutes and left the Royals with only one possession in the fourth quarter and they fumbled after six plays and 23 yards keeping the offense off the scoreboard for the first time this season.
By the Numbers:
- On a tough day offensively, Leslie Young was the leading rusher with 11 yards on four carries.
- Lester Lewis led the receiving corps with four catches for 60 yards.
- Darrin Davis, Jr. was 8-for-15 through the air for 85 yards and had two interceptions.
- Loronza Smith had 11 tackles to lead the defense. He had eight solo tackles to lead all players.
- Kareem Givens was second on the team with eight tackles.
