Warren Hall hit the game winner as the buzzer sounded sending the capacity crowd into pandemonium. The win is the third in a row for the Royals who are now 15-4 overall and 5-4 in league play. The Warriors drop to 8-14 overall and an even 5-5 in league play.
A back and forth first half set the tone for the first rivalry match up of the season for the Royals and Warriors. The two teams battled to five ties in the first half as each side jockeyed for the lead. The Royals held their largest lead of the game, 43-37, with 21 seconds left before halftime. The Warriors scored the final two points of the half and the Royals took a 43-39 lead into halftime.
Josh Ellis and
Warren Hall scored 12 points each in the first half for the Royals.
Antonio Ansley came off the bench to add seven points as well.
The Royals' offense hit a cold stretch in the second half and the Warriors erased the four-point deficit en route to a 30-26 scoring advantage. In the final two minutes of regular, Hall hit three free throws to tie the game at 69-69 with 1:21 left. The Warriors missed their final two shots and
Keevis Tukes' game winner missed the mark in the final seconds sending the game into overtime.
The Royals had a five point lead in the first overtime period but the Warriors came back to score the final five points. The Royals had two shots in the final 16 seconds but both missed their mark.
In the second overtime period, each team held a five point lead. The Warriors took a one point lead with a three pointer by Brian Pace with 40 seconds left. The Royals missed on their next possession and were forced to foul with 12 seconds left. A miss at the charity stripe gave the Royals the last possession. Hall drove the baseline and put up a prayer that was answered as time expired setting off a court rushing frenzy.
Hall led the Royals with 27 points in the game. He finished 8-of-18 from the field and was 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
Josh Ellis had a career-high 20 points as well and had eight rebounds.
Antonio Ansley led the bench effort with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting.
Eddie Delegal had 10 rebounds to go along with eight points and two blocked shots.
Keevis Tukes paced the offense with six assists, six points and seven rebounds.
On Saturday, Jan. 31, the Royals welcome the 23
rd-ranked Southeastern University for a 4 p.m. matchup in the Turner Athletic Center. In their first meeting back in December, the Fire upset the Royals 92-85 in overtime.
