JACKSON, Miss. – Coming off their lone bye week of the 2015 season, Warner University football team lost on the road to Belhaven University (Miss.) 42-33. The Royals drop to 2-5 on the season while the Blazers snap a 15-game losing streak and improve to 1-6 on the season.
In what turned into a shootout, the two teams combined for 38 points in the first half. The Royals struck first with a 28-yard field goal in the first quarter. It was the first of 24 points in the first half for the Royals. The Royals scored three times in the second quarter including two touchdown runs by
James Bowers and a 14-yard interception return for a touchdown by
Travell Sherrod.
The Royals led 24-14 at halftime.
The second half started with 14 straight points by the Blazers giving them a 28-24 lead.
Darrin Davis, Jr. brought the Royals right back with a nine play 75 yard drive capped off with a one yard touchdown run.
It was déjà vu at the start of the fourth quarter as the Blazers scored 14 straight points and retook the lead 42-31 with five minutes left in the game. On the ensuing Warner possession, the Royals drove 85 yards down inside the Belhaven 10 yard line. Then on 2 and 5, Davis was intercepted at the one yard line ending the Royals comeback bid.
The Blazers ran out the clock and took a team safety in final seconds to make it a 42-33 final.
The Royals outgained the Blazers on the afternoon 385-350 yards. The Royals also outrushed the Blazers 135-39 yards.
Darrin Davis, Jr. finished with 255 yards through the air on 18-of-33 passing. He was also intercepted three times.
Roger Allen hauled in five passes from Davis, Jr. for a season-high 125 yards.
Bryant Benton was the Royals' leading rusher with 48 yards gained on 14 carries. James
Bowers scored twice on the ground for the Royals as well.
Loronza Smith and
Emmanuel Bien-Aime led the defense with five tackles each. Bien-Aime led the team with two tackles for loss. The Royals intercepted two Belhaven passes in the game. Derrick Payne-Mitchell and
Travell Sherrod recorded one pick each.
Terrance Belle and
Elevisi Halapio picked up one sack each as well.
Next week the Royals make their first-ever trip to the west coast with a visit to the University of San Diego. The Royals and NCAA-I FCS Toreros will kick-off at 9 p.m. EST
