Royals Lose Wild Game to Warriors 27-24

LAKE WALES, Fla. – Playing their final game of the 2015 season, the Warner University football team lost to cross-town rivals Webber International University 27-24 on Saturday afternoon.  The Royals finish their third season in school history with a 2-9 overall record and a 0-5 mark in The Sun Conference.  The Warriors improve to 6-4 on the year and finish the conference season 3-2.

The third annual Lake Caloosa Clash got underway with a 6-0 first quarter lead for the Warriors at Legion Field on Saturday afternoon.  The Royals turned the ball over three times in their first four possessions but held the Warriors to six points and a missed PAT in the first 15 minutes of action.

In the second quarter, the Royals set up shop at the Webber one-yard line following a 44-yard punt by the Warriors with 7:35 to go in the half.  From there the Royals went 99 yards in 16 plays capped off by a five-yard touchdown run by Darrin Davis, Jr. Angel Puente converted the PAT and the Royals carried a 7-6 lead into halftime over their rivals.

The Royals got a gift to start the second half after the Warriors fumbled the opening kickoff.  The Royals recovered the ball at the Webber 25 yard line and five plays later had a 10-6 lead thanks to a 40-yard field goal by Puente.  The Warriors regrouped however and score twice in the third quarter taking a 20-10 lead into the fourth and final quarter.
The lead grew to 27-10 at the start of the fourth quarter after the Warriors returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown.  The Royals responded well going 74 yards in 11 plays on their ensuing possession.  Roger Allen caught a nine yard touchdown pass to make it a ten point game, 27-17.

As the clock ticked down under seven minutes to go in the game, Warner's Ronnie Harris forced Webber quarterback Billy Pavlock to fumble and the Royals regained possession at the 5:23 mark.  Eight plays later Byron Masoline punched it in from four yards out to make it 27-24 with just over three minutes to go in the game.

Needing a stop to give the offense a shot, the Warner defense flexed their muscles and forced punt on Webber's next possession.  After the punt, the Royals' drive started at their own three yard line with 1:31 left on the game clock.  Six plays into their drive the Royals faced a third down from their own 20 yard line.  On the next play, Davis, Jr. heaved a 54-yard pass that Tauran Wilson caught at the Webber 26 yard line with seconds left.  After a delay of game penalty, Puente lined up for a 52 yard field but it fell just short ending the Royals' comeback bid.

The home team has now won each of the three meetings between the two rivals.

Davis' day ended with 292 yards passing and 80 yards rushing.  He was 22-of-37 throwing the ball with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Lester Lewis was the leading receiver for the Royals catching nine passes for 108 yards.  Wilson had the big catch on the final drive finishing with three grabs for 65 yards.

Loronza Smith finished with 10 tackles in the game game.  Ke'Juan Monroe had eight tackles as well.
