Lady Royals Lose Tournament Opener to Mid-America Christian

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – In their first game of pool play at the 2015 NCCAA Division I Women's Soccer National Championship, Warner University lost in double overtime to Mid-America Christian University.  The Lady Royals, who won the NCCAA South Region title to advance to the National Championship tournament, drop to 8-9 with the loss and begin pool play at 0-1.

Both teams found the back of the net in the opening half.  The Evangels scored first in the 8th minute on a goal by Cici Mitchell.  Six minutes later Warner's Maria Diaz scored her fifth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.

It was a 6-4 shot split at the half in favor of Mid-America Christian.  Warner goalkeeper Sarah Bergkvist made three saves in the first half as well.

Both teams picked up the intensity in the second half as the shot totals for each team increased.  The Evangels outshot the Lady Royals 13-8 but Bergkvist made five saves and the rest of the Warner backline kept the Evangels off the scoreboard.

Tied at 1-1, the teams played the first overtime period without a goal.  Both teams had two shots and one save in the period.  Then in the second overtime period with less than three minutes to go, Mid-America's Kaci Power scored the game-winner on the assist by Mitchell.

Jamie Murray led the Lady Royals with five shots in the game including four on frame.  Kristen Isabelle put all three of her shots on target as well.

Bergkvist finished with 11 saves in over 107 minutes in goal for the Lady Royals.

The second of three pool play games for the Lady Royals comes on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 4:30 p.m.  The Lady Royals will face Houghton College (N.Y.) from the Austin-Tindall Soccer Complex.  Live stats will be available for all three pool play games and can be accessed here.
