BABSON PARK, Fla. – For the second time this season, Warner University women's basketball team lost to their crosstown rivals Webber International University on Tuesday night. The Warriors held off a late charge by the Lady Royals and won The Sun Conference match up 50-46. The loss drops the Lady Royals to 6-17 on the year and 2-12 in league play. The Warriors improve to 18-4 overall and remain in the hunt for a regular season championship at 11-3 in league play.
After a back and forth start to the game,
Montana Bass had the Lady Royals out in front by four with a three pointer at the 14:17 mark. Later in the half,
Marie Fleurival hit a jumper that tied the game at 19-19 with 3:22 left before halftime. The Warriors outscored the Lady Royals 5-3 over the remaining three minutes and took a 24-22 lead into halftime.
The two sides battled to three tie scores in the first five minutes of the second half. Bass hit two free throws at the 15:03 mark to tie the game at 29-29. From there the Lady Royals went ahead by three only to see the Warriors retake the lead with a 5-0 run down to the 12:16 mark.
Bass scored a tip-in in the paint with 8:05 to go that tied the game at 36-36. From there the Warriors ran out to a seven point lead, 45-38, thanks to a 9-2 run down to the 4:47 mark. The Lady Royals responded down the stretch with an 8-2 run to get within one point, 47-46, with 43 seconds left in the game. The Warriors made three free throws, however, while the Lady Royals missed their only shot attempt in the final seconds giving the home team a 50-46 victory.
Montana Bass continued to shoot well for the Lady Royals scoring 16 points. She finished 4-of-9 from behind the arc and had two rebounds as well.
Marie Fleurival recorded her fourth double-double of the season finishing with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Baylie Bridges also reached double digits with 11 points and five rebounds.
On Saturday, Feb. 14, the Lady Royals travel to Miami Gardens, Fla. to take on Florida Memorial University. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
