LAKE WALES, Fla. - The 2015 Warner University softball season got underway on Friday afternoon against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). The Crimson Wave won both games of the doubleheader dropping the Lady Royals to 0-2 to begin the year.
In game one, newcomer
Erika Shick got the start in the circle for the Lady Royals. The junior transfer was roughed up for four runs on eight hits in the first three innings as the Lady Royals fell behind 4-0.
The Lady Royals got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Brittany Winget opened the scoring with a single to left field that brought home a pair of runs.
Nicole Comstock followed with a sac-fly to centerfield that plated Winget from third.
The Crimson Wave had 16 hits in game one of the doubleheader and tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning and scored their final run in the sixth taking a 7-3 lead.
Kaitlyn Ficarrotta singled to center in the sixth inning scoring
Jacqueline Gomez from third to close out the scoring for the Lady Royals.
Shick (0-2) took the loss in game one with four runs allowed in 2.1 innings pitched.
Brittany Winget tossed the final 4.2 innings and allowed three runs with one strikeout.
At the plate, Ficarrotta led the Lady Royals going 2-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.
Nicole Comstock finished 1-for-3 with a RBI as well.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Crimson Wave jumped out to a 9-3 after four innings. The Lady Royals got RBI at-bats from Comstock and
Jessica Adams in the first and fourth innings.
Comstock collected her third hit of the game in the sixth inning as the Lady Royals tacked on two more runs to narrow the deficit to 9-5. Mackenzie Garcia also drove in a run with a sac fly in the inning. Down to their final three outs, the Lady Royals rallied in the ninth inning scoring one run on a Comstock single and had the bases loaded with the winning run at the plate. The Crimson Wave recovered and recorded the final out via strikeout leaving the bases full of Lady Royals.
Shick (0-2) took the loss in game two with three innings pitched and five runs (three earned) allowed. Winget again came on in relief tossing the final four innings.
Comstock had a huge game going 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and four RBIs. She also scored two runs in the loss. Shick was 3-for-4 in the game with a triple and scored three of Warner's six runs.
Next Wednesday, Feb. 18, the Lady Royals head to St. Petersburg, Fla. to take on NCAA-II Eckerd College in a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 5 p.m.
