Royals Fall to Thomas (Ga.) in Ninth Inning Collapse

LAKE WALES, Fla. – The Royals baseball team opened their Sun Conference series against Thomas University (Ga.) with a ninth inning loss on Friday afternoon. After taking a 5-3 lead into the final inning, the Royals gave up five runs to the visiting Nighthawks for their third conference loss of the season. The Royals are now 3-7 overall and 1-3 in league play.

After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the opening inning, the Royals offense answered right back with three consecutive doubles from the top of the order. Anthony Dovale drove in the first run for the home side, followed by a sac-fly from Broderick Rodocker to plate Dylan Gross. Dovale then found his way across home plate, scoring off a wild pitch.

The Royals offensive saw a spark again in the fifth inning, breaking up a 3-3 tie to regain the lead. Randy Rodriguez hit a ball hard through the left side, allowing Torri Pringle to score. Rodriguez advanced to third base on a Nighthawks defensive error. Dylan Gross then finished the job, with an RBI single of his own to give the Royals a 5-3 advantage.

Heading into the ninth, it seemed as if the Royals had the game all but locked up. The Nighthawks had a different set of plans and rallied to score five runs on two hits, and jumped ahead 8-5. The Royals plated one run in the bottom of the ninth but it would not be enough to pull out the win.

Dylan Heiring got the start on the mound for the Royals and was impressive. Heiring went 7.1 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits. The senior also recorded 13 strikeouts. Jordan Pike (0-2) took the loss after allowing three runs in the ninth without recording an out.

The offense was not lacking for the Royals, racking up 14 hits from seven batters. Torri Pringle led the Royals, going 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Randy Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Dylan Gross, Anthony Dovale, and Broderick Rodocker all had a multi-hit performance as well.

The Royals and Nighthawks will return to Royals Field on Saturday, Feb. 21 to wrap up the three game series. Game one of Saturday's double-header is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
