LAKE WALES, Fla. – After winning game one of Saturday's double-header against the visiting Nighthawks of Thomas University (Ga.) 3-1, the Royals dropped game two 7-4 and lost The Sun Conference series 2-1. After the completion of the weekend, the Royals now stand at 4-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
Royals' starter Jimmy Diven (2-1) went five complete innings in his second win of the season in game one. Diven was solid for the home side, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five. Jordan Pike earned his first save of the season, tossing three hitless innings.
The Royals jumped ahead 3-0 after two innings and that was all they needed to get the win. Jose Quintana went 2-for-4 at the dish in game one for the Royals. Randy Rodriguez and Anthony Dovale were the only other Royals to record a hit in the victory.
In game two of the double-header, the Royals fell behind 6-0 after three complete innings. That deficit ended up being too big of a hole for the offense to get out of. The Royals cut the lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the eighth but fell short in the end.
Dalton Kelley (0-2) went 6.1 on the mound and allowed seven runs, five earned, on nine hits. Kelley struck out seven Nighthawk batters in his fourth appearance of the season.
Broderick Rodocker went 2-for-3 and had the only multi-hit performance in game two. Dylan Gross, Jose Quintana, Tomas Rivera, and Zach Quillian all went 1-for-3.
The Royals will be back in action on Monday, February 23rd at 3 p.m. at Royals Field when they host the Panthers from Davenport University (Mich.) in a non-conference match up.
