Bass Leads Lady Royals in Road Win Over Embry-Riddle 60-54


DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Warner University got 18 points from Montana Bass and snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 60-54 win over Embry-Riddle University in Sun Conference women's basketball action on Saturday night in the ICI Center.  The win is the first for the Lady Royals since Jan. 7 in their first-ever matchup with the Eagles.  The Lady Royals won that match up 64-58 and sweep the season series from the Eagles.

Mariah Williams scored the first four points for the Royals as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead.  The Eagles responded with an 8-0 run taking the lead with 13:46 on the clock.  Embry-Riddle's Sabrina Whiting put the Eagles ahead 20-17 with 5:09 left before halftime.  From there the Lady Royals scored 10 straight points to close out the half.  The Eagles went 0-for-6 with four turnovers in the closing minutes of the half.

The Lady Royals led by seven at halftime thanks to a strong start on defense.  The Lady Royals forced 13 Eagles turnovers and held the home team to just five made field goals in the first 20 minutes of action. 

Williams and Bass had 15 of Warner's 27 points in the first half.  Williams led all players with eight points while Bass followed with seven.

Leilani Tuani-Fifita opened the scoring for the Lady Royals in the second half and gave Warner their largest lead of the game, 29-20.  At the 11:08 mark, Bass drained a three pointer to push the lead to 10, 41-31. 

The Lady Royals were 43.5% shooters in the second half and never let the lead get below five points the entire second half.  Hannah Kotzen ended the scoring with a free throw in the final seconds to secure the victory 60-54.

For the game, the Lady Royals forced 21 turnovers and scored 14 points off the Eagles' miscues.  Williams led the team with three steals along with Sara Poehlman who had two.

Montana Bass was 10-of-14 from the free throw line and finished the game with 18 points to lead all scorers.  Mariah Williams followed with 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field.  Kashari James led the bench effort with six points.

The Lady Royals (6-16, 2-11 TSC) close out the road portion of their regular season schedule next week with a pair of Sun Conference games.  First on Tuesday, Feb. 10, the Lady Royals make the short drive to Babson Park, Fla. to take on Webber International University at 5 p.m.  Then on Saturday, Feb. 14, the Lady Royals head south for their second meeting with Florida Memorial University at 5 p.m.
