LAKE WALES, Fla. - In their second conference series of the 2015 season, Warner University softball team swept their doubleheader with St. Thomas University on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Royals got timely hitting and superb pitching performances from Brittany Winget and Chelsie Valentine in their third doubleheader sweep of the season.
The sweep evens the Lady Royals' record at 9-9-1 and improves their Sun Conference record to 3-1. The Bobcats drop to 2-16 and remain winless in league play at 0-6.
Brittany Winget (3-2) got the start in game one of the doubleheader and tossed a complete game four-hit shutout. The freshman walked only one batter and retired nine straight Bobcats at one point. Winget also contributed at the plate going 3-for-3 with a RBI.
Erkia Shick delivered the big hit in game one with a three-run homerun over the centerfield wall in the second inning. Winget drove in the other Warner run in the fourth with a single through the left side.
In game two, the Bobcats wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the first inning off starter
Chelsie Valentine. From there, however, Valentine shut down the Bobcats offense for the next five innings.
On the other side, St. Thomas countered Valentine with Cristina Sacramento who held the Lady Royals scoreless for the first six innings of the game.
After the Bobcats added a big insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Royals entered the bottom of the inning down 2-0.
Makenzie Garcia and
Jessica Adams both reached base to start the inning and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.
Cynthia Micochero stepped up to the plate with two outs and delivered the game-tying hit with a single passed a diving Bobcats third baseman. After Melisa Costero came on to run for Micochero,
Jelisa Potter singled up the middle to score Costero from second completing the comeback for the Lady Royals.
Valentine (6-2) went the distance in the circle for the Lady Royals scattering seven hits and two runs with two strikeouts.
Garcia and Adams both collected two hits apiece in the win. Micochero finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
The Lady Royals return to Daly Field on Sunday, March 29, against Northwood University. The Sun Conference doubleheader will start at 10 a.m.
