Box Score LAKE WALES, Fla.- The Warner football team took on Virginia University of Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon as they played their first home contest since opening weekend. The Royals did not disappoint fans as the rolled to a 44-22 win over the Dragons. In the games opening play from scrimmage,
Bryant Benton took a hand off 61 yards for a touchdown to put the Royals up 7-0 very early. The game remained that way throughout the first quarter but in the second, the Royals opened things up. Triage McClary caught a pass from
Steven Frost and ran it 26 yards to the end zone for a touchdown and 14-0 lead. The Royals next took a long drive down to the one yard line where
Mark Holmes punched it in for another Warner touchdown. The extra point was blocked and returned 98 yards for a Dragon 2-point conversion. The Royals got the ball back one last time in the half and again took over as
Leron Berry carried the ball into the end zone for the fourth Warner touchdown of the half. The Royals would take a 27-2 lead into halftime after that score.
In the second half the Dragons came out throwing the football. On their opening possession they marched down the field and threw a 26 yard touchdown pass to make the score 27-8 after a missed extra point. The Royals would respond on a 5 play 64 yard drive that ended with
Steven Frost running it in from 6 yards out to make the score 34-8. The Dragons would get another touchdown in the third quarter on a 50 yard pass and convert the 2-point try to make the score 34-16 heading to the fourth quarter.
Jerome Lindo would cap a 10 play 72 yard drive as he ran ina touchdown from four yards to make the score 41-16. The Dragons would then get yet another touchdown pass but their 2-point try was intercepted in the end zone to make it a 41-22 game. With :23 seconds remaining the game, the Royals faced a fourth down so they sent Geness Kennedy on the field for a field goal try. Kennedy would split the uprights from 30 yards out to make the score final at 44-22 in favor of the Warner Royals.
Warner was led passing by
Steven Frost who finished 14-20 with 183 yards and a touchdown.
Bryant Benton and
Jerome Lindo led the team on the ground with Lindo rushing for 85 yards in 13 attempts and Benton rushing for 79 yards on 6 attempts. Each running back had a touchdown on the day as well.
Imari Price came away with 4 catches for 34 yards and Triage McClary had the lone touchdown reception for the Royals. Defensively, the Royals were paced by
Lane Burnett who had 6 tackles, 2 for loss, and 2 sacks on the day.
The Royals overall record stayed at 3-2 (2-1) after this game because Lynchburg is a non-countable opponent in the NAIA. The Royals will play their next game in Lakeland on the campus of Lakeland Christian against University of God's Chosen. Game time will be at 12 pm.
