Football Falls Short In 3OT Thriller

Box Score LAKELAND, Fla.- When the Royals began the week preparing for the Southeastern Fire, they did not think they would need to add in preparation for a two and a half hour lightning delay, a delay because the timer on the stadium lights never got changed so the lights went out, and for triple overtime. However, all these things occured in an exciting contest between the two teams that finished at approximately 1:30 am.

The Fire, who are receiving votes in the latest national poll, looked to be a tough opponent for the Royals. However, the Royals were up to the task as they opened up the scoring in the game with a Ryan McClellan 36 yard field goal in the first quarter. Southeastern was able to capatalize on a Warner fumble and return it 40 yards for a touchdown to go up 7-3. The Royals would storm back in the second quarter with two touchdown passes from DJ Davis. The first was a shovel pass to Jeff Suarez who ran it in from 3 yards out and the second was a 21 yard strike to Theo Hammonds. Southeastern would get a field goal and run in a touchdown to tie the game at 17 in the second quarter. The Royals would get the ball back at the end of the quarter and drive down the field. With seconds remaining, Davis would scramble for 42 yards down to the Fire 2 yard line. When Davis hit the ground, it appeared to be clear there were 2 seconds remaining on the clock. However, the time was never stopped despite Davis calling for a timeout as soon as he slid down. The referees agreed with the clock operator to send the game into halftime tied at 17.

The Royals air attack would not relent in the second half as Davis came out firing. The Royals would open scoring with a 50 yard touchdown pass to Eugene Witherspoon then would add another dime to Theo Hammonds for 26 yards to put the Royals up 31-27 going into the fourth quarter. The Fire would get a touchdown and a field goal to go up 37-31 on the Royals late in the game. With only 1:59 remaining in the game and down by six points, the Royals got the ball back from the Fire. Davis completed a 12 yard pass to Witherspoon, who got out of bounds, then a personal foul penalty on the Fire, and a 15 yard yard by Davis would all set up a 34 yard touchdown pass to Imari Price to tie the game at 37. The Fire would block the extra point which would have ultimately won the game for the Royals as Southeastern missed a field goal at the end of regulation to send it into the first overtime.

In the first overtime, The Fire scored a touchdown to get things going but Davis would respond with a touchdown strike of his own to Jeff Suarez to tie the game back up at 44. In the second overtime, Davis' first pass was intercepted to give the Fire a chance to win the game. They would attempt a field goal but it would be wide right to send the game into the third and final overtime. Southeastern would open up with a touchdown pass and convert the 2 point conversion to make it 52-44. The Royals would get a couple first downs, but on 2nd and goal from the 9 yard line, Davis' pass was intercepted to seal the win for the Fire.

The Royals would be led by DJ Davis passing going 28-49 for 295 yards and 6 touchdowns. Davis would also lead the Royals rushing with 17 attempts for 129 yards. Jeff Suarez and Theo Hammonds would pace the Warner offense receiving with Suarez catching 7 passes for 28 yards and 2 touchdowns and Hammonds hauling in 5 passes for 100 yards and 2 touchdowns. Defensively the Royals were led by Emmanuel Bien Aime and Travell Sherrod who each had 11 total tackles. Bien Aime had a tackle for loss along with a forced fumble and Sherrod had a pass break up and an interception.

Warner will travel up to West Point, Georgia on October 1 to take on Point University. Game time is set for 12 pm.
