Box Score LAKELAND, Fla.- The Royals softball team opened conference play Friday in Lakeland as they took on the Southeastern Fire. The Royals started, senior,
Chelsie Valentine on the mound and got all they could ever ask for from her and then some. Valentine finished the game throwing 4 innings, recording six strikeouts, two walks, and no hits.
Paige Davis then went in the fifth inning and shut the door on the Fire with a perfect inning, recording two strike outs, to complete the no- hitter. The Royals capitalized offensively on some Fire errors beginning in the third inning when they would push across 3 runs on 2 hits and 3 Fire errors. The big blow offensively for the Royals came in the fifth inning when they exploded for 5 runs on 6 hits.
Ashton Sparkman's double down the left field line opened the scoring in the fifth.
Chantal Crockett then came through with a 2 RBI single that was followed up by a
Jessica Adams 2 RBI single of her own. With the Royals up 8-0 after five innings, they would defeat the Fire via the mercy rule and come away with a conference opener win.
Jessica Adams finished 3-4 with 3 RBI's while
Chantal Crockett finished 1-3 with 2 RBI's.
Chelsie Valentine got her third win of the year on the mound. The Royals and Fire will meet up again tomorrow at Southeastern in a double header beginning at 11 am.
