Royals Advance To Championship Game In Opening Round

Box Score LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.- The Royals advanced to the championship game in the Lawrenceville bracket of the NAIA Opening Round with a 3-2 extra inning win over host Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies. Chelsie Valentine threw her second complete game victory of the tournament. The Royals struck first in the game with a two RBI single to left field that scored Torey Scott and Caylin Delones in the top of the third. The Royals held on to the 2-0 lead until the sixth inning when the Grizzlies struck for two runs of their own to tie the game. The Royals threatened in the seventh with a runner in scoring position and in the eighth with the bases loaded but were not able to push a run across. Valentine, however, did not allow a base runner after the two run sixth inning. In the top of the ninth, the Royals finally pushed a run across when Savanna Rumore walked with the bases loaded to give the Royals a 3-2 lead. Valentine went out in the ninth and pitched a perfect inning to push the Royals on to championship day. Warner will play Georgia Gwinnett at noon on Wednesday for a chance to move on to the NAIA World Series. The if necessary game will be played after the conclusion of the 12 pm game.
