LAKELAND - FLA. Tonight, the Warner Women's Volleyball Team faced their conference opponents, the Southeastern University Fire. The Lady Royals walked away with a monumental upsetting win over the NAIA powerhouse in three straight sets.
Going into tonight's game, the Fire were receiving votes in the NAIA national rankings, and held an overall record of 17-2, and a conference record of 9-1. The Royals have faced some struggles so far this season, and were rounding out the middle of the conference pack with an overall record of 9-11, and a conference record of 5-4.
The first set saw the Fire make only a few more errors than the Royals, but it was taken full advatage of. Despite the Fire having more kills, it was the Lady Royals who powered through to take set 1 28-26. Sets 2 and 3 saw the Royals tie the Fire for kills per set, and then out hit them by 11 kills respectively.
Offensively,
Breeanna Navarro,
Marissa Intoppa,
Alexandra Gonzalez and
Becca Bowlin led Warner with a combined total of 33 kills thorugh out the three sets. Four Royals were able to reach double digit dig numbers, combining for 77 digs.
This win gave Southeastern only their second loss in the past 12 games, and will likely give the Royals the confidence needed to surge through the rest of the season.
The Lady Royals will play again this Saturday in a home matchup against the Johnson and Wales University Wildcats at 2:00 PM.
