No. 24 Royals Softball Splits With No. 21 Fire Taking Possession Of 2nd Most Wins In Warner Softball History

LAKELAND, Fla. – History was made in Lakeland for Warner Royals softball as they won their 34th regular season game. The 2018 record of 34-13 broke the tie of 33 wins with the 2009 lady Royals. With The Sun Conference Tournament up next, the Royals now only chase the 2008 lady Royals who put up 37 wins. Against the Southeastern Fire, the Royals split the double header dropping game one in extra innings 0-1, then booted up the offense winning game two by a final score of 7-3.

GAME 1 WU 0, SEU 1 (8 Innings)

Game one was everything that was expected from The Sun Conference foes. It turned into a pitching battle as no runs were surrendered until the bottom of the 8th inning. Sylvia Welsh (17-4) threw 7.1 innings in the circle and had a final line of 8 hits, 1 unearned run, 4 walks and struck out 2. With not much offense to work with, the Royals who struck out 15 times, managed 3 hits, two coming off the bat of Madison Taylor and one off the bat of Brittany Winget all three registering as singles. The Royals took the extra inning loss to the Fire moving them to 33-13 on the season and a Sun Conference 16-7.

GAME 2 WU 7, SEU 3

The Royals offense put out the Fire in game two and it was Brooke Olinger and Jordan Lewis that held their own in the circle. Brooke Olinger (5-2) received the start and threw 5 innings giving up 5 hits and 3 runs before handing the ball to Lewis in the 6th who shut the door throwing 2 innings walking 2 and striking out 1 completing the win.

Sara Bruno continued her dominance on the field as she got the scoring started in the top of the 1st. With Chantal Crockett at third, S. Bruno hit a sacrifice fly out to center field deep enough to score Crockett. The Fire answered back in the bottom of the 1st with a sacrifice fly and a later single that put the Royals behind 1-2. In the top of the third, Avery Cotterill bruised a ball to the left field wall giving her a stand up double and scored Crockett from 2nd. Immediately following Cotterill's double, Sara Bruno smoked a ball over the center field fence for a no doubt 2-run shot, the Royals leaped to a 4-2 lead. In the top of the 5th the Royals roared again off of a triple from Kayla Bruno that scored Claire Arendas. Brittany Winget then slung a base hjit into left field that scored K. Bruno. Not long after that, Kasey Helsin extended the Royals lead to 7-2 when she singled into left field scoring Megan Hammett. The Fire would plate another run in the bottom of the 5th off a sacrifice fly but it was not enough to stop the Royals. The Royals improved to 34-13 overall with a TSC record of 17-7.

Warner University lady Royals softball finishes out the 2018 regular season with the 2nd most wins in Warner softball history with a 34-13 overall record. But, the Royals are not done yet as they advance as the #3 seed into The Sun Conference tournament. Warner will take on the #6 seeded Keiser University Seahawks on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
