JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Warner University Baseball has won the NCCAA South Regional Championship and will advance to the World Series May 24
th-26
th in South Carolina.
The Royals won the NCCAA South Regional boasting an undefeated record of 3-0. The Royals entered the tournament as the #2 Seed. Their first game was against the #3 seeded Toccoa Falls College where the Royals offense opened up for a 10-3 victory. They moved on in the winner's bracket to take on #4 seeded Brewton-Parker College where the Royals fought through 11 innings of baseball to come out on top 6-5 to advance to the Championship game.
In order to emerge as the NCCAA South Regional Champions they had to earn a tough win against the NCAA D-II Emmanuel College Lions. With a 5-5 score following the top of the 5
th, the Royals opened up with 4 runs off a
Kevin Troncoso single,
Xanders Vazquez single and a couple mistakes by the Lions defense taking a 9-5 lead. The Lions added 2 runs in the top of the 6
th cutting the Royals lead to 9-7. A
Derek Deler single for an RBI in the bottom of the 6
th, then
Junior Fermin hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the 8
th with bases loaded gave the Royals the 11-8 victory.
Jake Leiffer (1-1) collected the win on the mound and
Anthony Torres picked up his 9
th save of the season for the Royals. Torres commented on the save and said, "I just wanted to get the first guy out and then close the door and finish the Championship for my boys."
Junior Fermin had a massive South Regional Tournament finishing 6-15 at the plate with 10 RBI's and a grand slam to his name.
Head coach
Jeff Sikes and the team last won the NCCAA South Regional Championship back in 2016. Sikes commented on the game saying, "I'm proud of the guys! Not only for winning the Regional Championship, but also for how they have represented our school with character and integrity."
