BOTETOURT, Va. – Warner University Softball has launched themselves into the history books with an extra innings walkoff thriller in NCCAA World Series Quarterfinal matchup. The Royals now sit at 37-17 overall that ties the record for the most wins currently held by the 2008 lady Royals who were 37-13 falling in the NAIA National Championship.
It was an absolute thriller in Botetourt, Va., as the #2 seeded Warner University (37-17) and the #7 seeded Mid-America Christian University (39-23) faced off in extra innings. Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 8
th inning, the Royals had runners on second and third.
Megan Hammett dug in with a chance to give her team a walkoff victory. The Evangels decided to intentionally walk Hammett to load the bases and have a better chance for an out at any bag. The pitcher must throw 4 pitches in the intentional walk. The Evangels pitcher lost control of the 1-0 delivery and the quick feet of
Brittany Winget at third base caused a reaction to head home where she beat the throw and delivered the Royals an extra inning victory, and in walkoff fashion.
Kayla Bruno carried the hot bat in the game going 2-4 with a run scored, a double and a single.
Brittany Winget was 2-4 with 2 singles and 2 runs scored.
Megan Hammett finished the day 1-2 at the plate with 1 walk and 2 RBI's.
Not only was it a World Series Quarterfinal victory, but the Royals tied the Warner University record for the most wins in school history with 37. The 2018 lady Royals are now co-owners of the record with the 2008 lady Royals who had a final season overall record of 37-13.
Brittany Winget, the game winning run, did not realize at the time how big of an impact that moment was. She led off the inning with a base hit that got things started, she said "Going up to the plate I knew I needed to do my part to help us get the win. I felt faster than I have all season today, and luckily I got the chance to use it. I'm so proud of my team and the way we pulled together to get this win and it makes it even cooler that we're making history."
With the Quarterfinal NCCAA World Series win, the #2 seeded Royals advance to the Semifinal matchup where they will face the very tough #3 seeded Central Baptist College Mustangs (40-19) tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. EST.
