COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The 2019 All Mid-South Conference Sun Division teams and individual award winners were announced by conference officials on Wednesday. The Royals placed five total players on both teams.
Theodore Hammonds was voted first team as a wide receiver. Before the passing of Hammonds earlier this fall, he hauled in 14 catches for 193 yards and 2 touchdowns and played in just four games. Jeffery Jennings made the first team ballot for all-purpose. Jennings served as a triple threat for the Royals with 139 yard on 8 rushes with a touchdown, 26 catches for 487 yards and 5 touchdowns, also he amasses 310 yards on 14 kick return attempts. After establishing himself as now a household name,
Javon Wilson was named to the first team. Wilson became the first Royals running back to ever rush for 1,000+ yards in a single season and also now holds the record for the most 100+ yard rushing games in a career and a single season.
Luke Hiers was named to the second team offensive line. Hiers led a Royals O-line that only allowed 12 sacks on the season and only missed one game.
Kama Jackson received a bid to the second team as a defensive back. Jackson played in all 10 games for the Royals and was the overall leader in tackles with 66. Jackson had 42 solo tackles and 24 assisted tackles. He also finished the season with 6 tackled for a combined loss of 16 yards, 1 sack for a 4 yard loss, and 4 interceptions for a combined 85 yards on the returns.
Southeastern's (Fla.) Cooper Jones is the Craig Mullins MSC Sun Offensive Player of the Year, while Keiser's (Fla.) Sage Chen-Young is the MSC Sun Defensive Player of the Year.
The individual awards and all-conference teams are selected by a vote of the Bluegrass Division's coaches. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.
In addition to the players of the year, St. Thomas' (Fla.) John Israel-Cooper is the Offensive Freshman of the Year and Southeastern's Loobert Denelus is the Sun Defensive Freshman of the Year. Keiser's Doug Socha is the 2019 Ron Finley Sun Division Coach of the Year.
Jones averaged 288 yards of total offense per game and accounted for 26 touchdowns this season. He completed 60.2 percent of his passes while throwing for 2,584 yards. Jones finished first in the MSC in passing yards per game (287.1) and second in total offense per game.
Chen-Young intercepted six passes in nine games to garner MSC Defensive Player of the Year. He is tied for the lead the MSC and is second in the NAIA with 0.7 interceptions per game. Chen-Young added 42 tackles and helped the Seahawks defense rank third in the country in pass defense efficiency (94.5).
Israel-Cooper finished his freshman campaign with 48 receptions for 641 yards and six touchdown. He ranks in the top 15 in the MSC in both receiving yards and in receiving yards per game.
Denelus totaled 38 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and recorded eight sacks in his first year with the Fire. He is tied for fourth in the MSC with 0.9 sacks per game and ranks fifth in the conference in total sacks.
Socha led Keiser to a 9-0 record during his second year at the helm of the Seahawks. Keiser won its first-ever MSC Sun Division Crown finishing 6-0 in conference play. The Seahawks went 4-0 in the regular season against ranked opponents and are No. 7 in the NAIA.
29 players earned first team all-conference honors and 28 were selected second team all-conference as voted on by the coaches. Ties for all-conference teams were not broken.
