Warner Baseball – Vazquez Sets Warner Single Season Record; Royals Split Day Two Of WU Invitational

LAKE WALES, Fla. – Warner University split their double header today Spring Arbor and Michigan-Dearborn, falling 4-3 to Spring Arbor in their 1st game and defeating Michigan-Dearborn 2-1 in their 2nd game of the double header.
 
Xanders Vazquez broke the Warner single season record for consecutive game with a hit (19) setting the mark in the 1st game of the day, going 1-2 with 1 run scored, 1 stolen base and 2 HBP.
 
Vazquez hit over .400 during the 19 game hit streak and has also reached base safely in every game he has played this year (24).

Game 1
Andres Fernandez took the mound for the Royals in game 1 and only pitched 2 innings before relieved by Joey Theune who pitched 4 innings, striking out 8 and only giving up 2 hits.

Warner jumped on the board first when Anthony Martinez grouned into a 3U allowing Josh Strickland to score from 3rd base in the top of the 2nd inning.
 
Spring Arbor added 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the 2nd inning, taking the lead 2-1 as the Royals stepped up to the plate in the 3rd inning.
 
Spring Arbor added another 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to extend the lead to 4-1.
 
The Royals scored their 2nd run of the game in the top of the 5th inning when Rafael Astacio singled to left field bringing home Scott Fickas. Royals trailed 4-3 after 4 ½ innings.
 
In the top of the 7th the Royals gathered some momentum and started to mount a comeback when Scott Fickas singled to left field driving in Xanders Vazquez but were unable to get another run across the board, falling 4-3.
 
Game 2
Jake Leiffer took the mound for the Royals to start game 2 of the day's double header, pitched 5 innings, struck out 6 and only gave up 1 hit before being relieved by Taylor Briggs who pitched 2 innings and grabbed his 3rd win of the season as the Royals won the game 2-1.
 
This evening games was a great pitcher's duel as the game saw 17 combined strike outs.
 
The Wolverines jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning off a single to left field.
 
Jake Leiffer and Taylor Briggs continued to pitch lights out the rest of the game, containing the Wolverine hitters.
 
In the bottom of the 6th inning the Royals scored 1 run to tie the game when Alex Vazquez hit a SAC Fly to center field, allowing Xanders Vazquez to tag up from 3rd, and added another run to take control of the lead 2-1 when Jan Martinez singled up the middle allowing Scott Fickas to come around and score the game winning run.
 
Taylor Briggs came out in the 7th inning, struck out 2 batters and produced a ground ball back to himself on the mound to seal the win, the Royals 20th win of the year, (20-7).
