Warner Women's Basketball Falls To The Phoenix In Day One Of The Warner Classic

LAKE WALES, FL- The Royals faced off against Cumberland University Phoenix (Tenn.) in Day one of the Warner Classic matchup in Lake Wales, Fla.

This was a back-and-forth game that saw the Phoenix pull away in the second half. Both teams would trade blows throughout the game, but it ultimately came down to rebounding as the Phoenix outrebounded the Royals (46-27). The Royals were led by great performance from Courtney Logan as she scored 12 points, knocking home two threes, to go along with three steals in the contest. The Royals were aggressive from the three-point line, attempting 26 shots behind the arc, but were only able to knock down two. Capitalizing off turnovers was a big stand out, as Warner and Cumberland scored 16 and 18 points off turnovers respectively. Jasmine Edwards continued her season dominance for the Royals tallying double-digit points for the eighth straight game to go along with eight rebounds and two steals. The Phoenix got a big-time performance from Kayla Gordon as she finished with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals. Cumberland came out of halftime swinging, furthering their lead till it was out of reach for the Royals. The Royals turned the ball over significantly less than their opponents but ultimately couldn't capitalize off of the Phoenix mistakes. Cumberland continued to widen their lead in the fourth quarter and defeated the Royals 58-39. Jasmine Edwards, one week removed from being named both Sun Conference and NAIA player of the week, continues to be the driving force of the Royals' offense. The Royals will look to bounce back tomorrow when they take on Sterling College (Kan.) in another Warner Classic matchup.
