LAKE WALES, FL- The Royals hosted the Ave Maria University Gyrenes in a Sun Conference matchup in Lake Wales, Fla.
This game showcased a back and forth first half that saw the Royals jump to a 28-26 lead going into the break. Both teams let it fly from the arc with each team knocking down four three-pointers early. The Royals shot efficiently from behind the arch and forced 12 Gyrene turnovers en route to an early advantage. The visiting Gyrenes would fight back, however, out-rebounding the Royals 40 to 28, and ultimately winning the contest 67-57. The Royals on the day shot 34.5% from the field and knocked down seven three-pointers on 43.8% shooting. The Royals got a great game from
Jasmine Edwards who finished with another double-double on the season. In total, Edwards scored 12 points to go along with 13 boards, two steals, and two blocks. The Royals were led in scoring by
Courtney Logan who tallied 14 points in the contest to go along with her four assists, and four steals. Logan continues to be a ballhawk on defense, topping the team in steals once again. The Royals capitalized on these steals, scoring 18 points off turnovers, compared to the Gyrenes 12. Ave Maria got a great performance today from Maria Kuhlman who scored 21 points on 61.5% shooting from the field. Even more impressively, was her five made 3-pointers, which helped the Gyrenes control the lead in the second half. Kayla Watson made her shots count today, notching 12 points on over 50% shooting. Despite a strong first half from Warner, they were ultimately unable to capitalize off their strong start. The Royals will look to continue strong conference play next Saturday (January 13th) when they host the St. Thomas Bobcats in Lake Wales, FL.
