LAKE WALES, Fla. – The Warner University Men's Basketball team made its home debut for the 2025-26 season on Thursday night inside the Turner Athletic Center, taking Thomas University down to the wire before falling just short, 73-70, in a hard-fought matchup.
After meeting the Night Hawks earlier this season in Thomasville, the Royals showed their growth and composure in a back-and-forth contest that came down to the final possession.
Josh Irwin turned in a dominant performance, recording a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, including four on the offensive glass. The Grad-forward was efficient from the field, shooting 9-of-15, and added a three-pointer and five free throws to lead all scorers.
Seth Childers continued to facilitate the Royals' attack with seven assists, orchestrating the offense and keeping the ball moving throughout the night. Defensively, Jamal Norris tallied three steals, while Akeem Dauphin added two blocks, helping Warner keep Thomas off balance in key stretches.
As a team, Warner shot 46.2% from the field (24-52), 26.1% from three (6-23), and 72.7% from the free-throw line (16-22). The Royals' energy and execution were evident as they nearly avenged their season-opening overtime loss to Thomas.
Despite the close result, Warner showed continued progress on both ends of the floor and looks poised to turn that momentum into wins as non-conference play continues.
The Royals will return to action next week when they host Florida National University inside the Turner Athletic Center.
