MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The Royals traveled to Miami Gardens on Wednesday for their next round of SUN Conference play at Florida Memorial University. After overcoming an early 1 goal deficit, Warner was unable to hang on for a draw and would fall 2-1 after conceding a goal in the final seconds of regulation.
The Lions of Florida Memorial struck first, finding the back of the net in the 8th minute of play to put the Royals down 1-0 in the opening stages of the match. The Royals picked up the pressure following the opening goal creating multiple chances before
Astrid Beckemeier blasted a shot past the goalkeeper for her 4th goal of the year to level the game back at 1. Warner continued to push after tying the game up, recording 4 more shots before FMU could record their final shot of the half in the 44th minute as the two teams remained locked at 1 going into halftime.
The two programs battled back and forth throughout the 2nd half as Royals goalkeeper and last week's SUN Conference and NCCAA National Defense Player of The Week,
Haley Van Houweling, secured 6 clutch saves to keep the match tied. The Royals created multiple strong scoring chances during final 45 including a late breakaway from
Elisabet Rosario, where the Sophomore fought through the Lions defense to earn a shot on goal and forced a save out of the opposing goalkeeper with just under 5 minutes remaining in the game. Unfortunately for the Royals, FMU broke the tie in 90th minute scoring on a corner kick to take the game by a final score of 2-to-1.
Warner finished the day with 13 total shots, 7 on goal, 1 corner kick and 8 saves. The Royals will have an opportunity to bounce back tomorrow when they play their final conference game of the year against Florida College.
