TAMPA, Fla. - Warner Baseball traveled to University of Tampa on Monday to take on the defending back-to-back NCAA D2 National Champions in a single game series. The Royals battled with the Spartans scoring 7 runs in the 4th Inning, but were unable to overtake Tampa and would fall 11-to-7.
The University of Tampa took an early lead against the Royals driving in 8 runs through the first 3 Innings of the matchup, but the Royals refused to quit cutting the Spartan lead down to 1 after the top half of the 4th Inning. The Royals offense was able to create a massive 7 run rally in the top of the 4th that started off with a
Paddy Smith RBI single to Center Field to drive in
Jhenzel Figueroa.
Ethan Pues followed that up with an RBI single of his own that scored
JD Swarbrick that kept the bases loaded for
Timothy Dunn. Dunn took full advantage of the opportunity given to him and hit a base clearing 3 RBI double down the left field line driving in Smith,
Adriel Torres-Gonzalez, and Pues. Warner kept the line moving and would score two more runs when
JD Swarbrick hit a 2 RBI single to bring home
Danny Garcia and
Raul Olivera to get the Royals to 7 runs.
Freshman
Cooper Hamilton had a strong outing for the Royals in his 2nd ever Collegiate appearance pitching 4 Innings in relief. In Hamilton's 4 Innings he held the Spartans to only 2 runs on 3 hits and recorded his 1st collegiate strikeout in Monday's outing. Dillion Grace had another strong outing out of the bullpen in his Freshman season throwing 1.2 Innings and allowed only 1 run on 2 hits against a very talented Spartan offense.
Warner's 7 run Inning marked the 2nd most runs scored by the Royals in a single Inning so far this season. The Royals' 7 runs against the University of Tampa was the most runs that the defending D2 Champs have allowed in a single Inning this season and is also the 2nd most runs that the Spartans have surrendered in a single game.
The Royals will look to continue to build upon these strong performances when they get back to SUN Conference play this weekend when Florida Memorial comes to Lake Wales for a 4 game series.
