LAKE WALES, Fla. - The Warner Softball team was able to come from behind on Friday to take the first game of their SUN Conference Series against Ave Maria University. In a pitcher's duel that saw no runs scored until the 5th Inning, the Royals were able to rally behind clutch hitting to earn a comeback 4-to-2 win over the Gyrenes.
Elle Hernandez was on fire for the Royals in the circle on Friday, going the distance while allowing only 2 runs on 7 hits and striking out 2 on the way to earn her 8th win of the season. Hernandez was perfect through 4.2 Innings on Saturday preventing AMU from reaching base at all until after recording the 2nd out of the 5th Inning. After the Gyrenes were able to create momentum at the plate the Royals found themselves down 1 entering the 6th Inning, but rallied to drive in 4 runs to take the lead.
Jillian Hudson drove in the Royals 1st run of the game on an RBI sacrifice fly to right field to bring
Diana Martin home to tie the game.
Grace Derstine then hit an RBI single to right that scored
Alisha Wagoner before Derstine successfully stole home on a double steal with
Meagan Bruns later in the Inning.
Lauren Fernald finished off the Royals rally with an RBI single to left to score Bruns and give Warner a 4-to-1 lead heading into the final Inning. The Gyerenes fought back in the 7th and cut into the Warner lead, but the Royals were able to fend off AMU to secure a 4-to-2 win.
The Royals will look to take the series tomorrow when they and the Gyrenes face-off in a double-header at Daly Field.
