RECAP: Royals Upset Webber International to Advance in Conference Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Warner Baseball team pulled off an upset win over the #1 seeded Webber International University to advance to Day 3 of the Sun Conference Tournament. Warner took the lead in the 1st Inning and were able to lead for the entire game to complete the upset over top seeded Warriors by a final score of 9-to-3.

Warner took an early lead after driving in 3 runs in the opening Inning of a potential elimination game for the Royals on Day 2 of the Sun Conference Tournament. Jacob Gumieny drove in the first 2 runs of the game when he hit a 2 RBI single into center field that brought home Gabriel Rodriguez and Dawson Schumann. Gumieny was later brought in to score a run of his own when Paddy Smith recorded an RBI on a groundout to give the Royals a 3-0 lead after the 1 Inning. Webber responded with 2 runs of their own in the top of the 2nd, but Warner went on to score 3 more runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Dawson Schumman hit an RBI double that score Carlito Collins before Raul Olivera hit a sacrifice fly to the center fielder to bring home Rodriguez. Gumieny went on to record his 2nd RBI in 2 Innings when he hit an RBI double to center to bring Schumann in. Timothy Dunn added another run to the Royals total in the 3rd Inning when he hit an RBI double to left-center to score Paddy Smith to help Warner establish a 7-to-2 lead after 3 Innings.

WIU threatened in the 4th Inning but were only able to bring in 1 run, but the Royals settled in as Easton Nunez threw a clutch strikeout to with the bases-loaded to end the Inning. Warner went on to add a pair of insurance runs over the next two Innings and pull away from the Warriors. Samuel Blanco recorded his 1st RBI of the Tournament when he reached on an error that scored Ethan Pues in the 5th Inning. The Royals final run of the game came during the 6th Inning when Evan Ledoux scored on a wild pitch to help the Royals secure the 9-to-3 upset win over their Crooked Lake Rivals.

On the mound, Freshman Easton Nunez threw a gem of a game in what was the biggest game of the season for the Royals so far. Nunez was dominant on the mound throwing 135 pitches over the course of 7.1 Innings while allowing only 3 runs on 7 hits and struck out 4 to earn his 7th win of the year. Aidan Murphy was nearly perfect in relief, recording the final 5 outs of the game without surrendering a hit and only allowed 1 batter to reach against one of the top offenses in the NAIA.

Warner will continue their Sun Conference Tournament run tomorrow, May 2nd, against the #5 seed St. Thomas University in what will be another elimination game.
