LAKE WALES, Fla. - The Royals women's soccer team got back in the win column on Tuesday night when they earned a 4-to-0 win over Florida National University. In the win,
Hailey Westphal recorded her 1st Brace as a Royal and 2nd in her collegiate career.
In the opening minutes of play, Warner was able to quickly establish their style of play over the visiting Conquistadors controlling the majority of possession and forcing an early save from the FNU goalkeeper in the opening minute of play. The Royals broke through in the 10th minute when
Astrid Beckemeier earned a Penalty Kick when she fouled by the FNU goalie in the box during a promising attack by the Warner offense. Senior
Gianna Bellomo stepped up to the spot and smashed a shot past the goalie for her 7th goal of the season to give the Royals an early 1-0 lead. Energized by the goal, Warner went on to record the next 9 shots in the game over 15 minutes.
Elisabet Rosario doubled the Royals lead in the 26th minute when she finished a cross sent in by
Astrid Beckemeier for her 11th goal of the year. The two teams battled across the last 20 minutes of the half, yet neither could find the back of the net before the break as Warner would enter halftime with a 2-0 lead.
The Royals continued to dominate possession during the 2nd half recording 11 shots, with 7 on goal, while holding FNU to only 1 shot over the course of the final 45 minutes. After 2 goals were called off due to offensive fouls by the Royals,
Hailey Westphal recorded her 1st brace as a Royals after scoring goals in the 79th and 87th minutes beating the goalie in 1v1 scenarios and doubling the Royals lead to 4. Both of Westphal's gaols were assisted by Freshman midfielder
Malina Salas, marking her 1st assists in her collegiate career.
Warner's 4-nil win also marked the 3rd shutout victory of the season for the Royals, which was secured by 2 saves by Royals goalkeeper
Haley Van Houweling. The Royals final stat line saw the team record 26 total shots, 17 on goal, 1 corner kick and 2 saves.
Warner will return to SUN Conference play this weekend when they head north to take on #24 SCAD on Saturday.
