Lady Royals Lose in Overtime to St. Thomas 2-1

LAKE WALES, Fla. – Warner University women's soccer team lost 2-1 in overtime to St. Thomas University on Thursday night.  The Bobcats scored the game-winner in the 93rd minute handing the Lady Royals their fifth loss of the season dropping them to 4-5 overall and 1-5 in Sun Conference play.  The Bobcats improve to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in league play.

After the first 45 minutes the scoreboard read 1-1 as both teams found the back of the net early on.  The Bobcats struck first with a goal in the 17th minute.  Three minutes later, Jamie Murray scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season off an assist by Ashley Cole to tie the game.

Despite a 15-5 shot advantage, the Lady Royals and Bobcats went into halftime knotted at 1-1.  Warner goalkeeper Sarah Bergkvist made five saves in the first half to keep the Bobcats at bay.

Neither team could score the go-ahead goal in the second half as both defenses flexed their muscles.  The Bobcats outshot the Lady Royals again 8-2 in the half but Bergkvist and the Lady Royals' backline did not break.

As 90 minutes ticked off the clock, the two sides headed for extra time but needed less than three minutes to determine the winner.  St. Thomas' Taylor Malone gave the visitors a conference road victory with the game winner in the 93rd minute.  The Bobcats recorded the only two shots in the extra frame.

Bergkvist's night ended with nine saves on 11 shots on goal by the Bobcats.

Murray led all Lady Royals with three shots in the game including two on target.

On Saturday, Oct. 17, the Lady Royals will close out the home portion of their 2015 season with senior night against Florida Memorial University.  Kick-off is set for 5 p.m.  Prior to the match the Lady Royals will honor the careers of seniors Maria Diaz, Jamie Murray, Ashley Casanas and Naybet Febo.  Fans are encouraged to show up early to celebrate the Lady Royals senior class at 4:30 p.m.
