AVE MARIA, Fla. – In the 107
th minute,
Naybet Febo converted a penalty kick to lift Warner University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Ave Maria University on Saturday afternoon. The double overtime victory is the fifth of the season for the Lady Royals (5-7) and their second in Sun Conference play (2-7). The Gyrenes fall to 6-9 overall and 2-7 in league play following the loss.
The Lady Royals had to play catchup in the second half after falling behind 1-0 in the first half. The Gyrenes got on the scoreboard first in the 44
th minute and outshot the Lady Royals 7-6 in the first half.
In the second half, the Lady Royals turned to their leading scorer for the equalizer.
Jamie Murray scored her 16
th goal of the season in the 67
th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
Kristen Isabelle and
Nicole Screnock combined to set up the score.
Neither team found the back of the net in the final 23 minutes sending the game to overtime. The Lady Royals recorded two shots in the first extra period but the two sides remained tied at 1-1.
Then with less than four minutes to go in the second overtime, an Ave Maria foul in the box set up a penalty kick for the Lady Royals.
Tiffany Methot received a pass from Febo then was taken out from behind setting up the kick. Febo calmly stepped up and converted the kick for the Lady Royals.
Murray led all players with nine shots including five on goal. She now has 16 goals in 12 games for the Lady Royals.
Sarah Bergkvist logged all 110 minutes in goal for the Lady Royals. The freshman made four saves defending 11 shots by the Gyrenes.
Next week the Lady Royals close out the 2015 regular season with a pair of road games. First on Monday, Oct. 26, the Lady Royals travel to Temple Terrace, Fla. for a match with Florida College at 7 p.m. Then on Friday, Oct. 30, the Lady Royals travel across Crooked Lake to battle rivals Webber International University at 3 p.m.
