LAKE WALES, Fla. – Point University scored 41 points in the first half en route to a 48-21 victory over Warner University at Legion Field on Saturday afternoon. The loss for the Royals is their fourth straight (2-4) after beginning the year 2-0 and drops their Sun Conference record to 0-3. The Skyhawks hot start continues as they improve to 4-1 overall and are now 2-0 in league play.
It was all Skyhawks from the first snap as the visitors scored three times in the first quarter including a special teams touchdown on a blocked punt and led 20-0 after the first 15 minutes of play. Not much changed in the second quarter as the Skyhawks scored touchdowns on all three possessions for a 41-7 lead.
The Royals touchdown came on a one-yard touchdown run by
Traven Phillips with three minutes left on the clock before halftime. The Royals' drive was kept alive by the legs and arm of
Darrin Davis, Jr. as he evaded pressure and found Jeff Suarez, Jr. for a 60 yard pass on 3
rd and 13.
The Skyhawks got the ball to start the second half and marched down the field and scored their seventh touchdown of the game to extend their lead to 48-7 over the Royals. On the Royals' first possession, they went 59 yards in 12 plays to score their second touchdown of the game. This time is was Davis, Jr. on a one-yard keeper to bring the score to 48-14.
That's where things remained until the fourth quarter when Warner's Byron Masoline scampered 15 yards to the end zone with 6:25 left in the game to give the Royals 21 points in the game. Unfortunately that's all they would get as the Skyhawks cruised to a 48-21 victory.
The Skyhawks gained 500 yards of offense against the Royals' defense including 292 through the air and 208 on the ground. The Royals countered with 367 yards of offense with 217 coming through the air and 150 via the ground game.
Three quarterbacks saw action for the Royals on Saturday afternoon. Davis, Jr. led the way with 14-of-24 passing for 176 yards. For the second straight week, Jeff Suarez, Jr. led the receiving corps with three catches for 79 yards. Masoline gained 57 yards on the ground to lead all Warner rushers.
Defensively,
Emmanuel Bien-Aime led the team in tackles with 11.
Loronza Smith, who sat out the first half, finished second on the team with seven tackles including one for a loss of two yards.
The Royals will get a much needed bye week next week before embarking on a grueling three-game road trip on Oct. 10. First up for the Royals is a trip to Jackson, Miss. to take on Belhaven University. After that the Royals head to San Diego, Calif. for a FCS matchup with the University of San Diego. Finally on Oct. 31, the Royals head to Johnson City, Tenn. to take on East Tennessee State University.
