Three Second Half Goals Lead Lady Royals Past Night Hawks


THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Warner University women's soccer team scored three goals in the second half and held on for a 4-3 road victory over Thomas University on Saturday afternoon.  The win is the Lady Royals' first in Sun Conference play this season (1-3) and their third overall in 2015 (3-3).  The Night Hawks drop to 4-7 with the loss and are now 1-3 in conference play.

After the first 45 minutes the scoreboard read 1-1 as the two sides traded goals in the first half.  Warner's Jamie Murray opened the scoring in the 16th minute with her eighth goal of the season off a Maria Diaz assist.  The Night Hawks answered in the 23rd minute with the equalizer.

Thomas held a 13-9 shot advantage at the break.  Sarah Bergkvist made three first half saves in goal for the Lady Royals.

The second half was full of action with five goals scored between the two schools.  The Night Hawks scored the first one in the 48th minute to break the tie.  Diaz added a goal to her earlier assist in the 52nd minute to tie the game at 2-2.

Murray and Diaz hooked up again in the in the 58th minute putting the Lady Royals ahead again 3-2.  Two minutes later the Night Hawks tied the game for the third time at 3-3.
The score remained locked at 3-3 until the 72nd minute with Warner's Kristen Isabelle scored the eventual game-winner.

The Night Hawks outshot the Lady Royals in the second half but Bergkvist and the rest of the Lady Royals' backline was up to the task holding on for the 4-3 victory.

Murray led all players with seven shots on goal and found the back of the net twice.  Through six games Murray is tops on the team with nine goals.

Next weekend the Lady Royals return home for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday.  On Friday, Oct. 9, the Lady Royals welcome in the University of South Carolina Beaufort at 6 p.m.  Then on Saturday, Oc.t 10, the Lady Royals step out of conference play for the final time at home to face Montreat College (N.C.) at 5 p.m.
