LAKE WALES, Fla. – Three second half goals gave the University of South Carolina Beaufort a 4-2 victory over Warner University in women's soccer action on Friday night. The Lady Royals led 2-1 at the break but dropped their fourth match of the season falling to 3-4 overall and 1-4 in Sun Conference play. The Sand Sharks improved to 3-9-1 overall and 3-2 in league play.
It was a fast start for both teams with two goals scored inside the first 10 minutes of the game. The Sand Sharks scored first in the seventh minute then Warner's
Jamie Murray evened things up with her tenth goal of the season in the 8
th minute.
Ashley Cole picked up her second assist passing to Murray who side-stepped the Sand Shark keeper with a nifty move and buried the equalizer in the back of the net.
In the 25
th minute Murray was at it again, dribbling the ball to the left side of the goal before ripping a shot up and over the keeper to put Warner ahead 2-1. The Lady Royals carried the 2-1 advantage into halftime behind strong backline play by
Naybet Febo and
Kristen Wilder.
The Sand Sharks held a 6-4 shot advantage in the first half and a 4-0 lead in corner kicks.
The Sand Sharks were relentless in their attack to start the second half and finally broke through with a game-tying goal in the 75
th minute. The go-ahead goal came in the 86
th minute and just over a minute later, the Sand Sharks added to their lead with their third goal of the half.
The Lady Royals backline was pressured all half long as the Sand Sharks churned out 13 shots finding the back of the net three times. For the game the Lady Royals were outshot 19-7.
Murray finished with four shots, three on frame.
Ashley Casanas had two shots of her own and
Maria Diaz finished with one shot.
Sarah Bergkvist made five saves logging all 90 minutes in goal for the Lady Royals.
On Saturday, Oct. 10, the Lady Royals join the men's soccer team in a doubleheader with Montreat College (N.C.). The women start things off at 5 p.m. followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
