LAKELAND, Fla. – In their final home game of the 2015 regular season, Warner University football program lost to Edward Waters College 18-13 on Saturday afternoon. The Royals have now lost eight games in a row after starting the season 2-0 and are 0-4 in The Sun Conference with one week left in the regular season.
The two sides traded touchdowns in the first half and were tied 7-7 at halftime.
James A. Martin scored on a six-yard pitch and catch from
Darrin Davis, Jr. in the second quarter to cap off a 10-play 76 yard drive that tied the game for the Royals.
The Royals offense had little success moving the ball in the first 30 minutes of the game punting on three of their six possessions. Outside of their touchdown scoring drive, the Royals totaled 64 yards of offense in the first half.
The Tigers scored the only points in the third quarter, a touchdown following a fumble in the end zone by Davis which the Tigers recovered for an easy six points. The Tigers extended their lead to 16-7 in the fourth quarter with a 26-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
The Royals came back got to within three points thanks to a one yard touchdown run by
James Bowers. As time wound down in the game, the Tigers made the final scoring play with a safety at the 2:01 mark of the fourth quarter to seal the victory 18-13.
Davis, Jr. finished 11-of-22 for 102 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He was also sacked twice and rushed 15 times for 43 yards. Bowers finished with six carries for 40 yards the one touchdown.
Six players caught passes from Davis, Jr. in the game led by
Jeff Suarez who hauled in three for 42 yards.
Lineback
Loronza Smith anchored a Warner defense that held the Tiger offense to 237 total yards. Smith finished with 11 tackles including one for a loss. He also blocked an Edward Waters point after attempt in the third quarter.
Ke'Juan Monroe had his best game of the season for the Royals. Monroe finished with eight tackles including two for a loss. He also forced a fumble in the game.
Next Saturday, Nov. 14, the Royals return to Legion Field where they will be the visitors in the third annual Lake Caloosa Clash against Webber International University. The two cross-town rivals have split the first two meetings in school history on the gridiron. Saturday's meeting will kick-off at 1 p.m.
