LAKE WALES, Fla. - The Warner University softball team split a doubleheader with Concordia University (Mich.) on Monday afternoon at Daly Field. The Lady Royals won game one 6-4 then lost game two 3-1 to move their 2015 record to 4-8-1.
After a hot start by the Cardinals in the first two innings,
Brittany Winget came on in relief and tossed five shutout innings to steady the Lady Royals.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Royals sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs on five hits taking a 5-4 lead.
Both Winget and Concordia starter Corrina Rotondo combined for three straight scoreless innings from the third to the fifth. The Lady Royals added a big insurance run in the bottom of sixth on a double steal by
Jelisa Potter and
Erika Shick.
Winget (2-0) retired the Cardinals in order in the seventh to seal the game one victory for the Royals. She finished with four hits allowed over six innings with three strikeouts. She was also 1-for-2 at the plate with a triple and two RBIs.
Offensively, the Lady Royals totaled just four hits in game one but benefitted from six Cardinals errors.
In game two,
Jessica Adams doubled home Warner's first and only run in the second inning. From there, Concordia's Kelsey Schaus and Cheyenne Brierley held the Lady Royals scoreless over the final five innings.
The Lady Royals threatened in the final innings putting six runners on base but could not get them home. The Cardinals scored three times in the final two innings, benefitting this time around from two Warner miscues, to take a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Madison Taylor got the Lady Royals off to a great comeback start with a pinch hit double down the right field line but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. With the momentum gone, the Lady Royals went quietly ending the game 3-1 in favor of the Cardinals.
Chelsie Valentine got the start in game two and pitched two scoreless innings. Winget (2-1) came on in relief for the second straight game and pitched the next four innings giving up three runs on eight hits.
Despite their one run on the scoreboard, four of the Lad y Royals' hits went for extra bases.

Makenzie Garcia scored Warner's lone run and was also 1-for-2 at the plate.
On Thursday, March 18, the Lady Royals return to Daly Field for a doubleheader with Oklahoma Baptist University. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
