LAKE WALES, Fla. - The Lady Royals softball team welcomed the Lady Bison of Oklahoma Baptist University to Daly Field on Thursday afternoon for double-header action. The Lady Royals won game one 8-4 and came from behind in game two to win in walk-off fashion. The sweep improves the Lady Royals to 6-8-1 on the season.
In game one, the Lady Royals got on the board first in the bottom of the opening inning thanks to an RBI bunt single from Nicole Comstock. Doubles from Jessica Adams and Erika Shick in the bottom of the third drove in two more runs and gave the Lady Royals a 3-1 lead. After the Lady Bison got within one run, the Lady Royals answered back with a four-run fifth to expand their lead.
The offense combined for twelve hits including a 3-for-4 performance from Shick in game one. Comstock went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jessica Adams finished 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
Chelsie Valentine tossed 6.1 innings and allowed two runs on two hits in her third win of the season. Gisella Mesa came in as relief for two-thirds of an inning and allowed two runs on two hits.
The Lady Royals had to come from behind in game two, trailing by 4-0 before getting on the score sheet. Nicole Comstock got the Lady Royals on the board first with a single through the left side in the bottom of the third. Kaitlyn Ficarrotta followed up with sacrifice-fly to left field to drive in the second run. Jessica Adams then got the home side within one run, with an RBI single to right-center.
Ericka Shick came up big for the Lady Royals in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot to left field and tied the game 4-4. Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Royals were looking for a hero and found that in Mackenzie Garcia. With runners on first and second, Garcia hit a deep single to right field to plate Ficarrotta for the win.
Shick stayed hot in game two, going 2-for-3 at the dish. Brittany Winget also went 2-for-3 and Jessica Adams went 2-for-4. The Lady Royals combined for 10 hits from seven different bats.
Brittany Winget got the ball in the circle for game two and went five complete innings, allowing four runs on four hits. After her win in game one, Chelsie Valentine (4-2) came in as relief and earned her fourth win of the season, tossing two shutout innings.
Next up for the Lady Royals is their opening game of Sun Conference play for the 2015 season. The Lady Royals will head to Daytona Beach, Fla. on Saturday, March 21 to take on Embry-Riddle University for a double-header set to begin at 1 p.m.
