DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In their first Sun Conference doubleheader of the season, Warner University softball team split games with Embry-Riddle University on Saturday afternoon. Both teams begin their 2015 league schedule at 1-1 while the Lady Royals move to 7-9-1 overall and the Eagles are now 13-11.
In game one, the Lady Royals got all the offense they needed in the first inning.
Nicole Comstock doubled home
Jelisa Potter and later scored on a Embry-Riddle throwing error to put Warner in front 2-0.
Warner starting pitcher
Chelsie Valentine took care of the rest en route to her fifth victory of the season (5-2). Valentine held the Eagles to five hits and one run in a complete game performance. The sophomore from Haines City, Fla. retired the Eagles in order three times and recorded seven strikeouts.
Jelisa Potter finished with two of Warner's four hits (2-for-3) and scored a run.
Nicole Comstock and
Makenzie Garcia picked up the other two hits, both going for doubles.
In game two, the Eagles' offense came to life to the tune of nine runs on 11 hits in a 9-0 run-rule affair. Starter
Brittany Winget held the Eagles scoreless for two innings before the home team scratched out a run in the bottom of the third inning.
A five-run inning blew the game open in the fourth and a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning ended the game 9-0.
Winget (2-2) took the loss with 3.2 innings pitched and four runs allowed. Valentine and
Erika Shick also saw action in relief and gave up five runs between them.
Offensively, the Lady Royals totaled four hits for the second straight game.
Makenzie Garcia collected two them going 2-for-2.
Nicole Comstock and
Erika Shick both went 1-for-2 as well.
Next weekend the Lady Royals return to Daly Field for a pair of Sun Conference doubleheaders. First up on Friday, March 27, the Lady Royals take on St. Thomas University beginning at 1 p.m. Then on Saturday, March 28, Northwood University comes to town for a 1 p.m. start.
