WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Warner University baseball team returned to Sun Conference action this weekend with a three-game series against No. 7 Northwood University. The Seahawks won game one in a shutout 9-0 on Friday then won both games of the doubleheader on Saturday 11-1 and 7-6.
On Friday night, the Royals were held in check by Seahawks starter Cody Gray who tossed eight innings of shutout baseball. The Royals scattered eight hits over nine innings but left seven runners on base.
Chris Mejia was 2-for-4 in the game and
Kevin Gregg collected the only extra base hit for the Royals with a double in the third inning.
In game two of the series, the Royals scoreless streak continued until the fifth inning when a fielder's choice by
Randy Rodriguez brought home
Torri Pringle for Warner's first run of the series. The Seahawks' offense roughed up three Royals' pitchers for 11 runs on 12 hits in game two en route to an 11-1 run-rule victory.
Mejia was 2-for-4 for the second straight game and extended his hitting streak to eight games.
Dylan Gross and
Tomas Rivera also had two hits each in the game.
In the series finale the Royals took a 4-0 lead after three innings. Gregg, Mejia and
Zach Quillian all drove in runs for the Royals to kick-start the offense. The Seahawks, however, came right back with a run in the fourth and added five runs over the sixth and seventh innings.
Trailing 6-4 entering the top of the ninth inning,
George Kirkland delivered a two-run homerun over the left field fence to tie the game. The Seahawks had the last at bat in the bottom of the ninth and made the most of it drawing a bases loaded walk to bring in the winning run 7-6.
Mejia finished the series 6-for-15 with two more hits in game three. Kirkland finished 3-for-5 with his third homerun of the season.
Kevin Gregg also recorded three hits (3-for-5) including two doubles.
The Royals return home next weekend for a three-game Sun Conference series with cross-county rivals Southeastern University. Friday's series opener will begin at 3:30 p.m. and Saturday's doubleheader is set for a 12 p.m. start.
