Baseball Splits With Cross-County Rival Southeastern

LAKE WALES, Fla. – The Royals baseball team wrapped up Spring Break with a Sun Conference double header against cross-county rival Southeastern University on Saturday afternoon at Royals Field.  The Royals took game one of the double header 5-4, but dropped game two 12-2 to split with the Fire. The Royals are now 12-24-1 on the season and 4-11 in league play.

The Royals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one in the bottom of the opening inning and maintained a lead for the entire nine innings of play. Dylan Gross put the Royals on the board first with an RBI single up the middle to score Chris Mejia. Kevin Gregg added to the lead with a double to right-field that plated two runs. George Kirkland then scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to increase the Royals lead to 4-1.

After the Fire cut the lead in half to 4-2 in the top of the seventh, Jose Quintana doubled to left-field to give the Royals an insurance run. The Fire got within one in the top of the ninth after a two-run homerun over the left field wall, but the Royals held on for the victory.

Jordan Pike (2-5) got the ball in game one and was solid for the Royals in the 6.2 innings of work. Pike allowed two runs on four hits and struck out eight Fire batters. Broderick Rodocker earned his third save of the season after closing the door on the Fire in the ninth. Rodocker allowed two runs on one hit.

Dylan Gross finished game one 2-for-2 at the dish, with two walks and an RBI. The Royals offense combined for seven hits in game one of the series.

After two scoreless innings, the Fire took ahold of game two and never looked back. The Fire scored 12 runs on 13 hits, including six run seventh to win the game in seven innings. The Royals were able to plate two runs in the bottom of the seventh after George Kirkland doubled to right center field to score Chris Mejia and Randy Rodriguez for their only runs of the game.

Dylan Heiring (1-5) took the loss in game two after allowing eight runs on 11 hits. Heiring struck out seven Fire batters in his fifth loss of the season. John Pacheco came in as relief and allowed four runs on two hits without recording an out. Jeff Dally also saw action on the mound in game two, and toss two-thirds of an inning without allowing a hit.

The Royals and Fire will complete their Sun Conference series on Monday, March 30, on the campus of Warner University. The game is slated for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
