DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In the opening game of a three game set with No. 19 Embry-Riddle University, Warner University baseball team lost 16-6 in eight innings on Friday night at Sliwa Stadium. The Eagles halted a Royals comeback in the eighth inning and scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth to walk off with the run-rule victory.
The loss drops the Royals' 2015 record to 12-26-1 and their Sun Conference record to 4-13. The Eagles maintain their third place position in the league standings at 12-6 and are now 25-13 overall.
The Royals fell behind in the second inning as the Eagles scored three runs to take the early lead.
Dylan Gross and
Tomas Rivera brought home Warner's first runs in the fourth inning narrowing the deficit to 3-2.
The Eagles answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning and added three more runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 10-3.
Jordan Pike doubled home Warner's third run in the fifth inning.
The Royals made things interesting with three runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it a 10-6 ballgame. However, in the bottom of the inning the Eagles sent nine batters to the plate and scored six runs ending the game in run-rule fashion 16-6.
Dylan Heiring (1-6) took the loss on the mound for the Royals tossing six innings with 10 runs allowed (eight earned). He walked three and struck out four Embry-Riddle batters.
Offensively, the Royals scored six runs on five hits against the Eagles.
Dylan Gross and
Broderick Rodocker both scored twice for the Royals.
Zach Quillian had a pinch hit single that scored a run as well.
