Box Score MIAMI, Fla.- The second day of the St. Thomas Invitational proved to not be as successful as the first for the Royals as they fell to Doane University in 5 sets. The match featured two sets that went more than 25 points and was close throughout. The Royals were able to come away with victories in the first two sets to take a commanding 2-0 lead on Doane. However, the Royals were unable to put away their counterpart when given chances and Doane was able to come from behind to take the match away from Warner. Despite some bad play from the Royals, they had chances to win the match on several occasions but Doane played tough and refused to be put away. Set 4 was a thrilling 32-30 win for Doane that gave them momentum going into the deciding 5th set. The Royals had match point on four separate occasions in the fourth set, but were unable to capatalize upon them.
The Royals were led offensively by
Adrienne Czaplewski, who had 18 kills, along with
Jenna Swaffer and
Kiara Rivera-Escudero who had 21 and 17 assists respectively. On defense the Royals were paced by
Thalia Mendez who had an astounding 43 digs in the match and Czaplewski who followed with 24 digs.
The volleyball team will have an exhibition match against University of Tampa to warm up for the Southeastern Conference Challenge in Barbourville, Kentucky on the campus of Union College beginning September 2. Their opening match will be against 7th ranked Georgetown College at 1 p.m.
