Box Score 2 BARBOURVILLE, Ky.-
Match 1: The Warner Royals women's volleyball team came back in day two rested and ready to win a couple matches. The first one of the day saw them face off against host Union College. The Bulldogs from Union would have little say in the outcome of the match as the Royals were ready to go and playing at a higher level. Set one had some back and forth early as the Bulldogs were ready to scrap and fight in the match. However, Warner was too much and they pulled away late to take a 25-19 set one victory.
The second set was a similar story as Union did everything in their power to keep pace with the Royals but just didn't have enough to do so. The set was close throughout, however, the Royals once again pulled away and took the set 25-22 from the host.
If the Bulldogs were going to go down, they were going to do so fighting. They were able to claw their way into pushing Warner late into the final set, but the Royals were too much for Union and won the set 25-23 and sweep the match 3-0.
The Royals were led in the match by Angie Pagan Perez with 11 kills and
Adrienne Czaplewski with 10 kills. Kiara Rivera Escudero put in 16 assists while
Raygen Lee added 14 of her own.
Thalia Mendez paced the Royals defensively with 19 digs in the match.
Match 2: The second match of the day, and final match of the tournament, for the Royals saw them face off with Faulkner University. Faulkner came into the match winless on the season and were ready to try and take down the Royals. The first set was an easy one for Warner as they rolled to a 25-17 win and looked to cruise to a 3-0 sweep over Faulkner.
The Eagles had other plans as they came out with fire in the second set and stunned the Royals with a 25-22 set two victory to tie the match at one set apiece.
With the Royals awake and realizing they needed to play to take down their scrappy opponent, they responded and were up to the task. Set three got a rise out of some Royals players as the opponent initiated some taunting. With the Royals fired up, they responded to take set three convincingly 25-18 and go into the fourth set up 2-1 in the match.
The fourth set saw much of the same old Warner Royals as they steamrolled Faulkner and were never in jeopardy of losing the set, scoring the final six points to win 25-18. Warner would win the match in dominating fashion 3-1 and finish the tournament with three wins and one loss. This improved the Royals season record to 4-2.
The Royals were led offensively by Angie Pagan Perez with 17 kills and
Adrienne Czaplewski with 8 kills. Once again Kiara Rivera Escudero led the way with 19 assists and
Jenna Swaffer added in 14 assists. Defensively
Thalia Mendez added another unreal match to her resume taking home 39 digs. Mendez would finish the tournament with 102 digs in four matches, besting the next best dig total by 17 digs.
The Royals will play an exhibition match against South Florida State College before playing host to conference foe Keiser on September 10 at 2 p.m.
